DESCRIPTION OF THE ITINERARY: Passing from the historical centre of Pisa we ride in direction of Vecchiano to the protected area: Massaciuccoli Lake. Oasis of LIPU (Italian Bird Protection League) with marsh orchids, pink hibiscus and ferns and fauna such as ducks, cormorants, coots, herons and reed warblers.

Here we can decide to park the bike and make a tour of the Lake by boat or by kayak.

Massaciuccoli, however, is not only a natural beauty. There is an historical part called “Roman Massaciuccoli”(www.massaciuccoliromana.it) consisting of a villa once belonging to the Roman Family of Venulei. The ruins, which also contain natural baths are still visible on the hill sloping towards the lake .

Continuing our uphill climb to Mount Balbano offers breathtaking views over Lake Massaciuccoli and the coast. Immersed in the countryside of Lucca, which alternates green and woodlands of birch and beech, we see the village of Nozzano Castello, famous for its wonderful medieval castle that stands at the crown of a rocky hill where the oldest part of the village is preserved.

We cross the bridge of the river Serchio in Ripafratta with its watch towers and a Fortress to come back to Pisa by the Puccini cycling path

Possibility to leave the bikes into the station of Ripafratta paying a small supplement and coming back to Pisa by train. Or to take the bike into the train to return to Pisa.
